The NRL season has come to a close and the offseason is well and truly into its work. The Redcliffe Dolphins have officially been introduced into the NRL for 2023 and already there is talk about who is going there and how well the team is going to do. Here are my five targets that I would have for the 2023 season if I were the Redcliffe Dolphins. Keep in mind this is purely based on who is off-contract, and who I think is a viable option for the club.
#5 - Christian Welch

The leader of the Storm and Queensland forward packs is coming off contract after 2022. Being a Queenslander, the appeal of going to a new club in his home state might be able to get Welch across the line, especially if the Dolphins can manage to sign a few other big names. This guy would be perfect for the forward pack, as he is a premiership winner, origin winner and a workhorse in the middle. Once the spine is complete Welch would be the first guy I’d target.
#4 - Joseph Manu

Joseph Manu was in the form of his career last season and comes off contract at the end of 2022. He would be the X-Factor this team would need, and whether they’d be able to get him in the centres or potentially in the spine, it would still be a great buy. There’s already been rumours in regards to him leaving the Roosters as well, so I think if the Dolphins have the chance, they should be signing him. A guy like Manu is a needle mover, attracting more marquee signings to the Dolphins whilst being such a talented player on the field as well.
#3 - Reed Mahoney

Realistically, the Eels aren’t going to be able to keep everyone. This could open the door for the Dolphins to swoop in and take Queenslander Reed Mahoney back to his home state. If they are unable to sign the likes of Harry Grant or Brandon Smith, Reed Mahoney is the next best hooker option. Seeing as he comes off contract at the end of 2022, the Dolphins would be silly not to make a play at the Eels number 9.
#2 - Cameron Munster

The Queensland origin and Melbourne Storm star five-eighth has already been linked as a potential signing for the Dolphins. He openly admitted he would love to be coached by Wayne Bennett again, and he would be just the right signing this club needs firstly as a leader, and then as an on-field general. If the Dolphins want early success, a guy who has never missed the preliminary finals wouldn’t be a bad start at all.
#1 - Harry Grant/ Brandon Smith

One of these two has to eventually be let go by the Storm and whichever one is, can and should be lured away to the Redcliffe Dolphins. Brandon Smith comes off contract after 2022 and realistically I don’t see the storm letting go of Harry Grant. However if the storm decides that Smith is their man, then even better for the Dolphins as Grant is someone they can build a team around for the next decade. In saying that either of these two would be perfect for the Dolphins and should certainly be brought to the club at first opportunity.
